Rick is an artist based on Bundjalung Country, in the Northern Rivers of NSW. After many years working in design and photography, Rick sought greater creative freedom. In 2023, he began expanding his artistic practice while studying at the Byron School of Art.
His mixed media paintings are informed by the rural landscape of his childhood—documented through his aerial photography—the rolling expanses of the local hinterland—and the immersive layers of his own garden.
Initial marks suggest roads, fences and creeks intersecting with crops, bare earth, and remnants of the original bush. As layers build and shapes are simplified or added they become abstract compositions that suggest more than the original landscape.
Texture plays a major role in the formation of the work incorporating paper, plaster and wood carving, often sanding between each layer to reveal the history of the piece.
Rick has participated in several group shows and is a finalist in the Sydney Road Gallery Emerging Artist Exhibition (2025). He has also held solo photography exhibitions and has twice been a finalist in the National Photographic Portrait Prize.
